Sage sticks are bundles of herbs – white sage – bound together by twine. Burning these herbs in order to prevent illness, ward off negative energy, or cleanse a space, person or group, is a tradition that goes back thousands of years.
Open the doors or windows, then place the bundle in a ceramic dish, bowl, incense tray, or other non-flammable vessel. Light one end of the sage stick with a match or lighter, let it burn for a few seconds, then blow out the flame to release the smoke. Walk slowly around each room, wafting the smoke in all directions. The smell of white sage brings a sense of peace and clarity, while clearing negativity from the room.
